Since 1988 Helsinki’s Etno-Soi! world music festival has brought artists together from all corners of the earth, from Indonesia to Indiana, but with a slight leaning towards the African continent. This year afro-pop sensation Dobet Gnahoré will carry on that tradition in the main concert at Savoy Theatre. But there is a buzz of activity in a number of clubs and restaurants around central Helsinki.

Etno-Soi! - Festival of World and Roma Music
Various venues

Appearing at many of these venues will be the co-hosts this year, artists recruited to the International Roma Music Festival – including Romengo from Hungary and Romania’s Nadara. The latter will play Savoy on 6 November, while the Hungarians will grace the highly dance-friendly floor of Ravintola Kaisaniemi the day before. Maybe this year it’s time to take a peek into the often opaque world of Finland’s Roma residents, this autumn in company with their European blood-brothers. There should be some high-kicking feet on those dance-floors!
