WELCOMING summer with a “village party” (kyläjuhlat) has turned into somewhat of an icon in Helsinki. Two of these outdoor events, not to be missed, are held during consecutive weekends at the end of May in Käpylä and Kumpula.
The Käpylä village party turns ten this year and celebrates the usual village party style by turning its idyllic streets lined with wooden houses and leafy trees into a true open air fiesta for the whole family. With flea markets, live music and activities for kids and adults alike, the atmosphere at Käpylä won’t fail to get you in the mood for summer.
Sat 22 & Sun 23 May
Sat 29 May
The Kumpula village party is the oldest in the city. It’s famous for its kilometrin kirppis – a flea market which runs along the narrow Limingantie. This event is also filled with workshops, craft stools, book sales, live music on three stages with performances by PMMP and Samuli Putro to name only a few, and much, much more.
What’s best is that both of these events are free of charge, so get out there and feel the joy of an urban village get-together!
